Face Mask Fashion: How the Pandemic Is Shaping the Future of Fashion
by Lauren Main
Considered by some to be a hassle, face masks are now mandatory for all Victorians. However, some have taken this as an opportunity to integrate a new accessory into their outfits, whilst keeping themselves and others safe.
A movement led by stars such as Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga, face mask fashion is beginning to popularise the life saving face covering as the ultimate accessory.
The surging demand for reusable masks has even seen some small fashion businesses take an unexpected pivot into made-to-order personalised masks.
Designs include leopard print, bumblebees and monograms, not forgetting the simple black, grey or white minimal mask designs promoted by high fashion magazine Vogue. The surgical face mask, usually made out of baby blue blended fabric, has been given a run for its money.
As we look back on 2020, there will be no mistaking the presence of the pandemic in everyone’s lives, characterised by the mouth and nose coverings. Masks began as a mandatory precaution, but have since been embraced by the fashion world, giving a whole new meaning to the term “must have” accessory.
